On Aug. 24, Icelandair announced that it recently conducted its inaugural passenger flight of an electric aircraft. Iceland’s president and prime minister flew separately onboard a twoseat Slovenian-built Pipistrel Velis eCTOL aircraft, the first electric airplane in the country. The flight was made possible by Rafmagnsflug ehf. (“Electric Flight, Inc.”), an Icelandic company that aims to promote the expansion of electric aviation. Icelandair, which is exploring possible electric- and hydrogenpowered aircraft, has pledged to reduce its carbon emissions by 50% per operational ton kilometer by 2030, compared to 2019 levels.
